Supervisory Board

The members of the Supervisory Board were elected by the Annual General Meeting 2010 until the end of the Annual General Meeting 2015.

Hans W. Reich (Chairman of the Supervisory Board)

Hans W. Reich was born in 1941. He is currently Chairman of Public Sector Group of Citigroup Inc. and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Citigroup Global Markets Deutschland AG & Co. KGaA. Before Hans W. Reich held the office of Chief Executive Officer of Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the company he entered in 1966. He held various positions at KfW where he worked for the major part of his professional career. He started his professional career with an apprenticeship at Dresdner Bank and obtained the degree as Bankfachwirt (certfied banking specialist) while working full-time.

Christian Graf von Bassewitz

Christian Graf von Bassewitz was born in 1940 in Rostock. Until his retirement in 2006 he was Spokesman of the General Partners of Bankhaus Lampe KG. His areas of responsibility comprised, inter alia, the treasury business, sales, participations and real estate business. He started his professional career at Bankhaus Lampe KG where he worked until his retirement in various positions except for a period of six years, during which he worked for the Bank für Brau-Industrie AG. During this period from 1973 to 1980 he became Board Member in 1975 of the said banking company. Graf von Bassewitz holds a diploma in business administrations (“Diplom-Kaufmann”) from Hamburg University.

Manfred Behrens

Manfred Behrens was born in 1955. He is Chief Executive Officer of AWD Holding AG and Member of the Executive Board of Swiss Life. He was nominated to this function in 2009. He entered AWD Holding as Co-CEO in 2008. Previously, Manfred Behrens worked for Swiss Life Group since 2004, where his position was CEO of Swiss Life Germany. Former positions in his professional career were Volksfürsorge Deutsche Lebensversicherung AG where he became Member of the Management Board in 1998. Until then he held management positions at Hamburg Mannheimer and Volksfürsorge, both major German insurance companies. Following completion of his law degree, he started his professional career at a law firm in Hamburg, which he left in 1984 to start at Hamburg Mannheimer.

York-Detlef Bülow (Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board)

York-Detlef Bülow was born in 1955. Since 1998 he works full-time as Works Council and since 2002 he is chairman of the Joint Works Council. York-Detlef Bülow entered Aareal Bank AG in 1979 and first worked as credit manager in the commercial real estate business. York-Detlef Bülow started his professional career with an apprenticeship at Wiesbadener Volksbank eG where he also worked in the private clients department.

Erwin Flieger (Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board)

Erwin Flieger was born in 1944. From 1999 until 2007 Erwin Flieger was Chairman of the Management Boards of companies of Bayerische Beamtenversicherungsgruppe. His current occupation is heading the Supervisory Boards of certain companies of Bayerische Beamtenversicherungsgruppe as Chairman. Before he entered Bayerische Beamtenversicherungsgruppe he held various offices within Württembergische Versicherung and of Securitas Group, where his last office was Deputy Chairman of the Management Board. Erwin Flieger started his professional career with an apprenticeship in the insurance sector followed by various business education programs (Versicherungs-Betriebswirt, Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute).

Thomas Hawel

Thomas Hawel was born in 1963. He works full-time as Works Council, currently holding the office of Chairman of Aareon’s Group Works Council. He started his professional career at Aareon Deutschland GmbH, which he joined in 1989. He worked there in various positions. Thomas Hawel holds a degree in economics, which he completed at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, Bonn in 1988.

Dieter Kirsch

Dieter Kirsch was born in 1954. Since May 2002 he works full-time as Works Council and is Deputy Chairman of the Joint Works Council. He entered Aareal Bank AG in 1983 and worked in various positions including the Work-Out Department and the Legal Department. Dieter Kirsch holds a diploma in legal affairs, which he completed at Universität des Saarlands in 1982.

Dr Herbert Lohneiß

Dr Herbert Lohneiß was born in 1945. Before his retirement in 2007 he was Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Financial Services GmbH. He joined this company in 2000. In the years prior to that, he had worked at Siemens Financial Services Division of Siemens AG, Siemens Kapitalanlagegesellschaft mbH and in the Financial Department of Siemens AG. In 1990 and 1991 Herbert Lohneiß was a Member of the Management Board of BHF Trust. He started his professional career in 1975 at J.P. Morgan where his last office was Member of the Management Board of J.P. Morgan GmbH with responsibility for credit analysis, Mergers & Acquisition and Risk Management. Dr Herbert Lohneiß studied physics at the Technical University in Munich, where he also achieved his doctor’s degree. He later added an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau and the degree of CFA (Certified Financial Analyst).

Joachim Neupel

Joachim Neupel was born in 1943. He is a certified accountant and tax advisor. Due to this qualification he was elected Chairman of the Accounts and Audit Committee of the Supervisory Board. Until his retirement in 2006 he was Member of the Management Board at IKB Deutsche Industriekreditbank AG (IKB) in Düsseldorf. His responsibilities within this office covered accounting, controlling, real estate business and tax issues. He started at IKB in 1988 as General Manager (Generalbevollmächtigter) and was nominated Member of the Management Board one year later. He started his professional career at Treuarbeit AG, an auditing company which later merged with PriceWaterhouseCoopers. His last office held in this company was Head of Banking Accounting at the Frankfurt branch. Joachim Neupel holds a diploma in business administration from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main.

Prof Dr Stephan Schüller

Prof Dr Stephan Schüller was born in 1952. Since 2006 Prof. Dr. Stephan Schüller is Spokesman of the General Partners of Bankhaus Lampe KG. In the period from 1984 to 2003 Professor Schüller worked for Hypo Vereinsbank Group. Inter alia he was Member of the Management Boards of Bayerische Vereinsbank AG, of Hypo Vereinsbank AG and as his last office within this group as Chief Executive Officer of Vereins- und Westbank AG. From 2003 until 2005 Professor Schüller was Managing Partner at a Private Equity Company. Prof Schüller holds a diploma in business administration of Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster where he also completed his doctorate. He is an appointed lecturer for banking business at Mercator School of Management of Duisburg-Essen University.

Wolf R. Thiel

Wolf R. Thiel was born in 1946. He is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Management Board of Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder, which is the official agency managing the retirement provisions for the civil servants of the Public Sector Services.In 2002 Wolf R. Thiel was appointed to this position by the Federal Ministry of the Interior where he started his professional career in 1978. He has held various offices in the Ministry. Since 1992 Wolf R. Thiel also is an honorary judge at the Federal Labour Court. He is also Member of the Management Board of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für betriebliche Altersversorgung (aba) and Chairman of the European Association of Public Sector Pension Institutions (EAPSPI).Wolf R. Thiel studied law at the University of Bonn.

Helmut Wagner

Helmut Wagner was born in 1951. He works full-time as Works Council, currently holding the office of Chairman of the Works Council of Aareon Deutschland GmbH. He started his professional career also at Aareon Deutschland GmbH, which he joined in 1980. He worked in various positions within the company. Helmut Wagner holds a degree in economics, which he completed at Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz in 1980.
