The Management Board

The Management Board is responsible for managing the company. In doing so, it is obliged to act in the best interest of the company and undertakes to increase its sustainable enterprise value. The Management Board ensures that all provisions of law are complied with, and endeavours to achieve their compliance throughout Group companies.

The Management Board develops company strategy, coordinates it with the Supervisory
Board, and ensures its implementation. It ensures appropriate and sustainable risk management and risk controlling throughout the company. The Management Board cooperates on the basis of trust with Aareal Bank AG's other executive bodies, and with employee representatives.

Dr Wolf Schumacher

Chairman of the Management Board (CEO)

Responsible for Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, Corporate Development, Human Resources, Legal, Compliance, Audit and Operations

Dr Wolf Schumacher has been Chairman of the Management Board at Aareal Bank AG since 2005, and is responsible for the areas of Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, Corporate Development, Human Resources, Legal, Compliance, Audit and Operations. He is the Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Corealcredit Bank AG and a member of the Supervisory Board at Aareon AG. In addition Dr Schumacher is active in various associations and foundations, e.g. the Association of German Banks (Member of the Management Board), the Association of German Pfandbrief Banks (vdp) (Member of the Management Board), the Advisory Council of DZ Bank AG (Member), the Real Estate Management Institute at the EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht (EBS REMI) (Chairman of the Board of Trustees), the Foundation for the Advancement of the EBS (Chairman of the Executive Board), the Zwerg Nase Foundation, Wiesbaden (Chairman of the Foundation Board) and the Institute for Banking and Financial History Research (IBF) (Chairman of the Management Board). In June 2012 Dr Wolf Schumacher has been appointed Fellow of the professional association RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), and now has the title of FRICS.

From 2003 until 2005, he held both the position of Spokesman of the Deutsche Genossenschafts-Hypothekenbank AG (DG Hyp AG) and was, at the same time, the Deputy Chairman of the Managing Board of VR Immobilien AG. Prior to that, Dr Schumacher worked for the HypoVereinsbank Group, initially as the Corporate Head of Planning and Control / Real Estate Management, and later also as member of the Managing Board of the HVB Real Estate Bank AG. His professional career began at the Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechsel Bank AG in 1988.

Dr Schumacher was born in Freiburg/Breisgau, Germany in 1958 and obtained his doctorate in law from the University of Hamburg.

Hermann J. Merkens

Hermann J. Merkens

Deputy Chairman of the Management Board

Responsible for Finance, Risk Controlling and Credit Management

Hermann J. Merkens has been Member of the Management Board at Aareal Bank AG since 2003. In 2014 he has been appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Management Board. His areas of responsibility include Finance, Risk Controlling and Credit Management. He is active in various associations, e.g. the Association of German Banks (Member of the Accounts Committee and the Risk Policy Committee), the Association of German Pfandbrief Banks (Member of the Committee for Banking Supervision and Risk Management) and the Frankfurt Institute for Risk Management and Regulation (FIRM) (Member of the Advisory Board).

Already in 1999, he joined Aareal Bank AG (back then DePfa Bank AG) as Head of Division Loans Commercial Property Germany, and was then appointed Deputy Member of the Management Board in 2001. Before, Hermann J Merkens was Director with general authority at Deutsche Interhotel Holding GmbH & Co. KG. His professional career started in 1985 at Deutsche Bank Group.

Hermann J Merkens was born in 1966 in Aachen, Germany and graduated from Berlin School of Economics with a degree in business administration (“Diplom-Kaufmann”).

Dagmar Knopek

Dagmar Knopek

Member of the Management Board

Responsible for the sales units in the Structured Property Financing segment

Dagmar Knopek has been Member of the Management Board at Aareal Bank AG
since 2013 and is responsible for the sales units in the Structured Property Financing segment.

Dagmar Knopek started working for DePfa Bank AG - Aareal Bank AG's predecessor,
as Head of Desk Great Britain already in 1999. In 2004, she started heading the
Credit Management division for international property financings, before going to New York in 2008 as Chief Credit Officer at Aareal Capital Corporation. Since 2010, she held the position as Head of the Credit Management division and was responsible for accompanying the bank's activities in Europe, the USA and Asia. Her professional career started in 1980 at Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechsel Bank AG.

Dagmar Knopek is a certified banker and was born in Herford, Germany in 1958.

Thomas Ortmanns

Thomas Ortmanns

Member of the Management Board

Responsible for the Institutional Housing Unit, the Treasury and the Organisation and IT divisions

Thomas Ortmanns has been Member of the Management Board at Aareal Bank AG since 2005 and his areas of responsibility comprise the Institutional Housing Unit, the Treasury and the Organisation and IT divisions. He holds various offices, for example as the Chairman of the Supervisory Boards at Aareon AG and Deutsche Bau- und Grundstücks-Aktiengesellschaft, as well as a member of the Supervisory Board at HypZert GmbH, Germany's leading personnel certification body for real estate valuers, or as a member of the Property Advisory Board at the Mannheim energy utility MVV Energie AG.

Before, Thomas Ortmanns was managing partner at the Consart Management Consultant GmbH. He started his professional career at the Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechsel Bank. The native-born Berliner (born 1960) holds a degree in business administration ("Diplom-Kaufmann") from the Technische Universität in Berlin.
