Sustainability Reporting

Our benchmark: high transparency

Responsible, transparent corporate governance is not just a tradition at Aareal Bank Group. It is also something to which we attach considerable importance and, in the eyes of the Management Board and Supervisory Board, expresses good business practice.

In line with the strategy of "increasing the transparency of our sustainability performance for stakeholders" that we derived from our materiality analysis, we use a variety of different transparency tools and align our activities with international reporting frameworks/guidelines.

We produced the 2016 Sustainability Report, which was entitled "#Thinking ahead. Acting consciously." (Download as pdf-file), on the basis of the GRI G4 Guidelines ("core" level). Its main focus is on the progress made during the reporting period in the twelve action areas for sustainability management, as well as on providing information about what we are currently working on. The voluntary limited assurance review of selected quantitative and qualitative information in the 2016 Sustainability Report underscores the high standards that we set ourselves in our sustainability reporting.

By issuing revised reports every year, we provide our stakeholders with a high-quality, substantial document that is produced in close cooperation with the various divisions. Aareal Bank Group’s sustainability reporting is supplemented and completed by our online Sustainability Disclosures, which have been prepared in accordance with the current version (G4) of the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines issued by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). In addition, the Sustainability Disclosures are based on the transposition into German law of EU Directive 2014/95 as regards disclosure of non-financial and diversity information (the CSR Directive). Constantly updating and enhancing the report content and format and dynamically adapting it to new market and related challenges is a demanding task, but one that we are happy to take on.

As the parent of Aareal Bank Group, Aareal Bank AG expressly supports the objectives and aims of the German Corporate Governance Code ("the Code") and regularly observes the amendments and enhancements to the recommendations adopted by the government-appointed Commission on the German Corporate Governance Code. You can find information on the implementation of the Code in the current declaration of compliance in accordance with section 161 of the AktG.

Aareal Bank AG already published its own governance code in 1999, three years before the German Corporate Governance Code appeared. This contained additional rules designed to avoid conflicts of interest. Since 2008, Aareal Bank Group has reported on its implementation of the rules set out in the German Corporate Governance Code exclusively in the decleration of compliance. Aareal Bank's own code is not being updated in its current form.

We also issued a declaration of compliance with the German Sustainability Code for the first time in financial year 2015.

We use this transparency tool to enhance the comparability of our sustainability performance and of the progress we have made.

In addition, as a signatory to the UN Global Compact, we have published an annual Communication on Progress every year since 2012.

The Communication on Progress shows how we are implementing the UN Global Compact's Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption, and the key measures that we have launched.
